[Harp-L] Re: Walter and SS

To elaborate a bit from the perspective of the top pro blues players I work
with and myself. Nothing can compare to the sound of a tube amp whose thick
sound drives the speakers, being able to feel the speakers and lean into them
when you want, hit solid notes when you want. Of course you need to be able to
pull and drive, it is an interactive experience one cannot get from a
processed unit that attempts to simulate that sound. Walter created progression
from his early years with Muddy when he sounded more like SJ 1, to the amplified
sound that he continued to create his spin with. Who knows what he would
have done with it, we can sit all day and talk about it, like Jack Johnson
versus Mohamed Ali, just opinion. We all have our own tastes. I have heard some of
the top players with a sound that leaves your ears ringing after one set, no
matter many notes they play it all sounds the same shredded sound. Some of
the best time was played off the mic through the PA when you could really hear
them. Sonny was one of the greatest as he just sat in front of whatever PA
system was there and just played his instrument. There were no special
requests of what type mic, just as long as their seating arrangement was stool on
the left, chair on the right, it was outta sight as Brownie would say. Please
stay tuned to for updates on the next part of the journey, Sonny Jr and Mitch
Kashmar will be teaming up to present an all day seminar culminated with a 90
minute dual harp performance backed by a 3 piece band, possibly in your
area. We are working on the details but basically the structure will be started
off with a 2 hour Sonny Terry seminar given by me where we will delve into the
man, and his style. Real life experiences from the only person alive that
played harp duets as extensively as I did, plus working through parts of songs
the exemplify his style, breaking down pieces so you can understand the
formation of the chords and soloing riffs. Break, then an hour seminar with Mitch
Kashmar, perhaps the best tongue blocking upper register player I have heard
from a sweetness point of view, along with Chicago tone that comes from
hanging with Bill Clarke but mostly being a club warrior or over 25 years.
Phrasing and formation of tone will his focus. Mitch and I will cover mics and their
different sounds through amplifiers, effects pedals that enhance, not take
awah from the sound. Break. Amplifier seminar, where by this time the new
Double Trouble amp will be out, plus having a 410 to show how tube substitutions
can be helpful along with bridging channels and what a custom crystal mic
channel does. Long break for dinner. The the show, live performance with Mitch
fronting the band and working together to play together, not just you solo
then I solo deal. Depending on enrollment we are looking at Approx. $229 - $249
for this all day rare event. I will rely on the good relationship with my
customers around the US to help with promotion and for their SJ 410to work
with. Each place the DT I bring new to the seminar will be sold for a discounted
price of I have to ship it back.. This should be happening in the next year
and a half, when I can say I am done with surgeries. If groups of guys from
particular areas think the area is right for us, I am looking to have help in
each area from my customer who can work at PR for that city. I am looking
forward to live interaction with players again. The next few rounds of surgeries
will be a challenge, more than I expected, I will keep those that care
posted. Thank You. Sonny Jr.
