my pleasure. it's not entirely selfless, of course. i like getting
this stuff too.

yeah, dialup is gonna take a long while. you might prefer to stick with
the other JR shows that have mp3 versions, which will be a good bit
smaller. or use the streaming capbilities on those to find which shows
or songs you like, then spend the time/effort to pull them down.
if you don't mind tieing up your phone line overnight, you could always
start a download before you go to bed each night. it'll take a while,
but you'll get it all. or make a friend of someone with cable and a
burner.

normally, i'd just offer to burn copies for folks who don't have
broadband. but my burner's unreliable these days. can't figure
out what the problem is.

no, the flac is just to decompress the files so you can listen to
them after you've got them. another reason you might prefer the
mp3 versions. your software already knows how to play those.

some tapers are violently anti-mp3 (or other lossy compression
schemes). they invest huge amounts of time, money, and care to
get the best recordings possible, and they take great pride in their
work. because of this, they don't want to see the result diminished
by having it distributed in degraded (mp3) form. the LMA recognizes
this, and lets the uploader specify whether to have derivitave formats
(mp3, ogg vorbis, streaming audio) created when a show is uploaded.

when i put a show up, i respect the wishes of the taper in this regard,
even though i personally prefer to have all formats available, which
makes it easier for more people to hear the music. that's why some
of the shows have mp3 versions, while others do not.
