Yes, the HD Mini Discs do record uncompressed but they run into the disc
limit pretty quickly when they do which as you point out at $7 a pop
isn't that much of a hindrance. You're stuck using Sony's software when
you transfer to a computer though. I'm not actually advocating for any
of these formats they all have their advantages and disadvantages. I
think if I had a need to record high quality digital format I'd most
likely buy the HD Mini. I sure did hate the original MD though. The
compression was awful. Yeah, I know the second generation is better but
you're talking to someone that can't stand most FM over the airwaves
broadcasts because of the compression artifacts, this while driving in a
noisy diesel truck.
So do the HD Minis need mic preamps to sound good? fjm
