Hi, guys.
Of course cost is one of the variables. But I assure you that the
MBDLX
bodies work great without being completely sealed. I am testing these
instruments for almost a year now, and I've had bad combs
(unfortunately)
and good combs (almost always). So Bulldog, although you are right
that
partially sealing wood causes warpage in most cases, this does not
happen
with the MBDLX comb.

I wish I could say that this reflects my experience. I bought a
Marine Band Deluxe and a Hering Vintage 1926, both in A, at SPAH, out
of curiosity.
While I prefer the overall response of the MB Deluxe, I found a few
things to be less than satisfied about:
- The partially sealed comb immediately began to swell, with the
teeth poking out about 1 mm. When I got home I sealed the comb
completely.
- the edges of the reedplates were sharp - sharper than any I have
ever encountered.
Once I sealed the comb, sanded the reedplate edges, and set the reed
action a bit more to my liking, I had a very nice harp. But until I
did, the harp would have been physically very uncomfortable to play.
