I haven't been to a studio (and probably never will), but common sense would say that you should try recording yourself at home if you haven't already.  It will at least help you get over the "freeze up" issue that makes you tend to play differently when recording than when not.  You obviously have a computer, and it probably has a cheap microphone, or you could get one for five bucks.  Sound quality will suck, but you can still learn a lot about the process.  Or you can get a quarter-inch to headphone cable and plug that from your amp to your computer for much better quality.  As far as recording software, there are all kinds of free programs online.
