Hi Robert,

I agree that bending is not the main reason for breaking reeds.
I've seen quite a few players breaking reeds, who don't use bends much.

However, don't bending makes the reed to vibrate in a... well...
special vibrating mode, which might result in metal fatique at certain
part(which may be different location compared to the natural pitch)?
Then, how about overblowing?

Anyway, it is an interesting idea, to think that bending actually 
reduces stress...
