Hey Don, To get a big wide vibrato (and tone)
don't think
of it as a throat vibrato but one coming from your
diaphragm
(gut) .Instead of eh try uh with your throat very open
use your
diaphragm to break up your inhales into chunks of
breath
rather than your usual flow. Start w/ slow quarter
notes at a
consistent tempo. When your're solid there do eighths
then
sixteenths .From there slur these chunks together and
you'll
have a cool vibrato .You can also do it w/eighth note
triplets .
Lots of blues singers prefer a (or at least use) a
fast vibrato
(like Sonny Boy) which classical musicians eschew
however
this style does convey a serious emotional urgency .
Your
vibrato or lack of will be a key element in developing
a style
of your own . One hurdle many of my students (and a
lot of
pros encounter) is in creating a vibrato the center of
the tones
waver is flat . Playing on pitch with or without
vibrato is definitely worth striving for-Stevie
Wonder's vibrato is very
sweet because of his superb intonation . Paul
Butterfield had
a vibrato to die for .Check out "Driftin' and Driftin"
either live or studio version .
