Well, this is a harmonica list, not a jazz list. I think we could
substitute any generic "complex music" term (classical, bluegrass, some
rock and pop, etc.), and then discuss the suitability of the diatonic
or chromatic harmonica for it. I tried NOT to refer to a style of
music in my post, because I don't think it's pertinent to the topic
being discussed, for precisely the reasons you detail.

Anybody know this one? I usually sit this one out,
but the rest of the band thinks it would be cool to
get some harp behind it. Any suggestions for
positions or scales? The format goes:
IV, I, VI, I, VI, V.... I, I, IV, IV, b5DIM, I, VI,
II, V, I
I want to do some light comping, and have enough of a
feel to take a solo or two.
Thanks.

The New to Jazz website, Jazz Dictionary defines Jazz as an
improvisational,
expressive style of music, characterized by syncopated rhythms, 'blue
notes'
and the use of seventh and ninth chords. This may sound overly broad to
some.
I think its more of a "know it when I hear it" kind of thing.

your links are fine, except that most peoples' mail software breaks the
long links into multiple lines. which means that if you just click on 'em,
you get only up to the first line break, which is not the full URL. if you
paste the entire URL back together, they're fine.

Tom, Are you kidding? Wrong tree indeed. Jazz has many forms. If HL isn't
jazz, than what is? What would you call what he played with Bela Fleck?
I even play a little "jazz". It usually sound bluesy or funky, but it is
jazz to someone.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the most excellent clip. I really admire
the musicians you're working with -- so fluid and
profountly deep into the groove. And youre harp
work is magnificent! I love how you changed up
sounds in mid song. Was that done with the DigiTech
RP-whatever gizmo? Great stuff, never over stated
IMO, with everything done in service to the song...
Love the War quote at the end. You make it sound so
easy.
Keep up the great work, my friend.

Both Chris and Rob have graciously included me on their lists of jazz
players. Gosh, thanks guys, but I don't belong there. I certainly
work hard at playing chromatically (and your posts are some evidence
that I may be getting somewhere), but I'm exploring the Latin, pop, and
swing side of things. Put me up on a stage with real jazz guys and,
unless I get to call the tune or the band is feeling extra merciful, I
simply can't hang.
It seems probable to me that there are less than five people worldwide
that could hang with Howard Levy and William Galison playing strong,
no-excuses jazz on diatonic. Certainly less than ten. I'm not one of
them.

Put me in George (no nickname) Brooks. I play at jazz. I do play always in
an improvisational, in the moment manner. And always from an (self)
educated, somewhat enlightened viewpoint.
I love jazz. I want little to do with music that is not in a jazz
(improvisational) spirit.

Just try second position - you'll be surprised how much fits - use the
sixth of the scale a lot (2 or 5 blow) - works for both the VI & II
chords.
Use the 3rd (3 draw) and 5th (4 draw) for b5dim.

positions or scales? The format goes:
IV, I, VI, I, VI, V.... I, I, IV, IV, b5DIM, I, VI,
II, V, I
I want to do some light comping, and have enough of a
feel to take a solo or two.
Thanks.

Sebastien is great. One thing I like better about Howard Levy's playing is
that great vibrato (ala Chris M.)
That though is a personal taste though. There are great sax players with
killer vibrato and guys that hardly use it at all.
Let's all convince William Galison to record on diatonic!
I wish Sebastien's website had an English version, there is a lot of good
learning material on there.

this tune, like most Freddie King tunes are guitar featured tunes.
like Charles says, it¹s easy to follow along in 2nd.
my band on Guam had Freddie and Albert King nuts in it,
and this is one tune of his we did.
the crowd always loved it b/c we renamed it ³Astumbo²
a local Guam village.
i think that these F. King of songs do well to have the harp as a
supporting
role,
and let the guitar do it¹s thing.
you can do unison on the refrain, choruses, etc.
i would have similar suggestions for most of other F. King songs we did--
hide away if done right by the guitarist(s), you almost want to lay out
altogether.
san-ho-say is a fine tune for harp again 2nd position.
tore down excellent for harp.
Albert Collins i actually easier for the harp to get involved first off,
no one can ever sound like Albert
so all bets are off on staying out of it. still, you can play the horn
section lines and make his tunes groove
like they should.

Jazz is a nebulous term. A more manageable discussion might be "Who is
playing convincing BOP on
a diatonic?" I've seen Sandy Weltman do it. I've seen Allan Holmes do
it.
I can't do it but I can fake it through memorization. I get indescribable
satisfaction from
learning and playing Wardell Gray solos and Bird phrases.

Subject: Re: [Harp-L] Freddie King's "The Stumble" and learning from guitar
Thanks for the help guys! I think I can get a handle
on the tune, and I like the idea of supporting the
song rather then trying to cut into the guitar work.
It is also fun to work on something other then a I IV
V.
We do a lot of Freddie King and Albert Collins tunes.
Hideaway is one of my favorites and I try to emulate
the organ part from one of the many versions I've
heard. Can't remember which one. It always goes over
well. We play Tore Down too, but I don't think I've
ever played harp on that one.
I've actually spent some time trying to play some of
those guys's guitar solos. You can sometimes get a
little bit of an Albert Collins feel playing third
position major in the middle octave. I know that most
nights I play the head to his solo in Too Tired (in
cross, however), but then eventually go my own way. I
also play some of his stuff from Dirty Dishes in third
major. When we play Love Her With A Feeling, I
sometimes play Freddie's solo pretty much note for
note (and then get back to "my" stuff).
Whereas I'd never play a harmonica solo I've
transcribed note for note in a live setting, it can be
really fun to quote a guitar player or other
insturment. I tend to get a few head turns from the
guitar players in attendance when I do stuff like
that.
