This is a good comment.
However, if one were to just hear a changed head which, many times to the ears, improves it, why worry about the reasons for the change? It stands on its own. Don't have the artist need prove that they can play it straight.
I find this challenge with the diatonic fascinating and am always looking for ways to expand my musical interpretational skills by successfully and subtley sidestepping the problematic tones.

While it is true that Miles Davis, Cassandra Wilson, and many other jazz artists lend their own interpretation to material by changing the head, and many times to my ears, improve it, I'm absolutely certain that they don't change it because it's too difficult for them to play or sing note for note. I'm sure they're able to play it straight.
