Re: [Harp-L] best of pigpen

It's a matter of taste, but wouldn't the best of Pigpen be like the John Cage piece that's nothing but silence. Jerry Garcia was even worse as a singer, but Pigpen was right up there. I could have taken the voice if he could have sung on key. His keyboard playing was fine.

The one thing the Grateful Dead always lacked was a competent singer.

i was perusing the forums at archive.org, and someone had
put together a "best of pigpen" list, with favorite versions of
various songs listed by date. i poked around a little, and
found that almost all of them were on the archive. i thought
i'd post it here, since i know some of you are fans, and there's harp on some of the tracks.

pigpen was a member of the early grateful dead,
on keyboards, harp, and vocals. he was no little walter,
but his harp playing was solid, and effective, fitting the
music well. he was also the embodiment of the dead's greasy biker blues image, a persona that died with him
in 1973(?). check out the first track, "good mornin' little
schoolgirl" for a taste.
