This is actually one of the most informative articles ever printed on
recording the acoustic harmonica. I'm glad to see it on the net --
thanks for the link, John. When it originally came out a few years
ago in Electronic Musician Magazine I had a few dozen copies xeroxed
for distribution to students, novice engineers and others who would
ask about the topic.
One tip in this article that I've found to be very useful was the
recommendation of the Royer R-121. This was not a mic I had
previously thought of for recording harp, but I quickly discovered
that it's a fabulous choice for high-keyed diatonics, ie when
overdubbing with, say, a D, Eb, E, F, F# or high-G harp. Much of the
strident overtones are warmly diminished.
A highly recommended article, methinks, and one that should be
bookmarked and saved by anyone looking to work studio gigs with
acoustic harp. Thanks again, John, for re-drawing it to our
attention.
