Get better tubes:
Tell him you want to be set up with some NOS tubes for a fender
bassman. Plug 'em in and rebias the amp - this is a great page for
learning how on your new Bassman LTD. The page is for the Hot Rod
Deville but it is exactly the same as the basssman ltd. If you don't
want to deal with rebiasing then at the very least get some NOS
preamp tubes - as you look at the back of the amp the tubes to the
far right should be this configuration 12ax7 12ax7 12ay7 - this is
how they were in the original 1959 bassman.

I've enjoyed being a member for over 10 years. It was easier to pay
close
attention and sometimes participate back when I was a computer systems
analyst
for the State of Delaware. Yes, I'll admit I spent some (significant)
desk time
reading Harp-L posts at my desk when maybe I should have been working
harder
as a Banyan Vines admin. or writing SQL queries to the database....
Now that I mostly read the digest and occasionally post from home
(since I've
been in public education for @ 9 years and am now an Assistant
Principal at a
high school - for my day job), I still enjoy the experience of talkin'
harp.
I've learned a lot, found friends, discovered new talent, picked up a
nice
Hurricane V-8 amp, and chuckled at some of the oh-so-serious occasional
squabling that results when folks talk to each other without the
benefit of seeing
facial expressions. On the whole, its a very well run, very civillist
that
includes incredibly bright and experienced members.
My thanks to all the folks from Chris to Hugh to Barry et al that make
it
work.
Extra harp content: we played the Chesapeake Inn on the deck yesterday
12:30
- 4:30 and had a great time. 80 degrees F and sunny. We had a sax and
B-3 in
addition to the usual line-up and had a great time, going wireless
onto the
dock, watching a young lady in a very patriotic Memrial Day bikini
waxing her
boat. Life is good! http://www.chesapeakeinn.com/

Many years ago, I celebrated a wedding anniversary in Troy, Michigan
at a
sort of supper club called Paul's. They sometimes had musicians come
to
entertain. This was the best anniversary I ever had. There were 2
men who
played harmonica and I think they called themselves Dr.Harmonica.
They had
a lot of electronic gear to back them up. We had such a good time
that we
returned a few times when we heard they would be playing there. It
got to
where the wife of one of them sat with us. I think her name was
Lorraine.
We moved and with busy lives, we lost touch. I was wondering if they
read
this list. I would like to tell them that those nights we went to see
them
were so very special to me. If they still play in the Detroit area, I
would
be interested in knowing their schedule. I have looked for them on the
Internet. I think the DR stood for one first name beginning with D
and the
other man's name beginning with R.
Thanks in advance for your help....Gail

Hey Chris,
I was wondering, do you experience any signal loss with the hush
unit? If so
is it worth the trade off? Do you need to make adjustments in amp
controls
to compensate for that at all? I haven't used many outboard pedals
but they
always seems to be a bit of a trade off in my experience. A guitarist
I play
with has a Buddha amp with an effects loop built in that I've played
through.
Not the greatest amp for harp but not bad either...however the
effects loop
made a noticeable difference in maintaining all signal strength and
punch with
outboard boxes. Could be it's just me but I wonder if many other harp
players
who use feedback beaters or other external effects notice any
degradation....?

Pretend that you have a grapefruit in your mouth and then try to hit
that note.
I really only use that note as a passing tone. The only song I can
think of where it's useful is when I play Body and Soul on a Bb harp.
I usually play that tune on an A harp but will try other things like
a G, Ab or Bb. I can't remember having to sustain that note for any
other reason. I'm not trying to discourage you from the exercise but
perhaps you time would be better spent on a note that many OB'er find
weak and trivial.
But if you're going to practice then some markers to try...
hit it in tune, it's almost always flat
try to bend it up at least a half step
hit it with Vibrato
hit without activating any other note before.
Good Luck.

sustaining 1 hole OB?
Try tensing your diaphragm. Yawn, and note what happens to your
diaphragm. Try holding the tension it without the yawn. When your
diaphragm gets strong, it might then be possible to sustain the 1 OB.
There are a number of good diaphragm exercises. I know Richard Hunter
posted some years ago. Train rhythms can work for this. (If your
diaphragm is already strong, you're good to go.)
I agree with Chris that it's important to create a large resonant
cavity. You can sometimes squeak out the one OB, but you've got to get
it in a more full-throated way if you want to sustain it. You need to
hit and then hold a precise *low* resonant point. Precision comes
with practice, but if you do not support the note with your diaphragm,
the effort to sustain it will be fruitless, and frustrating.
George

No noticeable signal loss. It works very well by itself but I've
been using it in conjunction with the MXR 10-band EQ. You can shape
and add all the tone you want with that thing and notch out the
feedback frequencies (usually 1K-2K)
The kinder unit seems to strip some highs. I'm not knocking the unit
and would probably use one if I could justify the $365. I got the
rocktron hush on ebay for $35 shipped and the MXR on ebay for $52
shipped - That's maybe the best $87 bucks I've spent.
However, it doesn't beat my best purchase - Boss DM-2 at a garage
sale - $2 bucks! The guy said he had it for over 20 years and lost
the adapter for it and thusly didn't think it held a charge any more.
:-) Silly silly man, all I did was change the battery and get a 9v
adapter from Radio Shack.
I think every harp player that plays amplified should have a rocktron
HUSH and or MXR EQ 10 band EQ. I was just telling somebody off list
that the MXR can be used for soloing as you can adjust the gain and
output volume as well as notch out the offending frequencies.
I'm running a really hot bassman with three 12ax7 preamp tube. I can
get the amp beyond 6 without feedback, however I did get extremely
high pitched squealing feedback from the wife but the rocktron works
great for that too if you throw it at her. :-)

A few weeks back I asked you all for info on Mark Ford since I had
taken on
a freelance assignment to preview the Ford Brothers' Band's gig in
Prague,
Czech Republic. Well, here's that story. I wasn't given very much room
to
play with length-wise, but I WAS able to convince the editor to put the
brothers' pic on the cover of the newspaper's entertainment supplement
that
week! For the interview, I sat with Mark and Robben while they had
dinner at
their hotel. Tremendously nice guys, very funny and full of love for
music -
that's clear. The article isn't as "harmonica-centric" as I would have
wanted, naturally, since it was written for a general newspaper
audience.
Anyway, enjoy ..........

Band of (blues) brothers: Mark, Patrick and Robben Ford carry on the
tradition
By Mark Nessmith
For The Prague Post
The year is 1969 and the Charles Ford band ? featuring future
blues/jazz
fusion guitar hero Robben Ford, nascent harmonica virtuoso Mark Ford
and
eldest brother Patrick Ford on drums ? is opening a show for Muddy
Waters at
the Keystone Corner in San Francisco.
"That place was a major Hell's Angels hangout," recalls Mark with a
laugh.
"And oddly, it was right by a police station."
More than a little in awe of Waters, Mark approached the blues giant
and
asked if he'd like to sing a song with the brothers' band. "He just
turned
me down. I felt kind of ashamed for having even asked him," Mark says.
"He
scared me a lot. I was so little, like 16.
"Then we were playing our next set and Robben's soloing on a slow
blues,"
Mark continues. "All of a sudden everyone starts clapping, and here's
Muddy.
He comes up and says, 'These little white boys got everything but one
thing
? me!' And then he sang, 'I'm not going east, I'm not going west, I'm
not
going north or south. I'm going just around the corner to my baby's
house!'"
Waters later had the brothers come up and jam with his band. "We were
all
elated, like little kids," Mark says.
Following that gig, legend has it that Waters urged Chess Records to
sign
the Charles Ford Band, which they'd named for their father. Robben
nods with
a smile. "Pat has the contract that Chess sent, framed and on his
wall."
But instead of signing with Chess, the brothers broke up the band.
"Mark basically bailed," Robben says. "He didn't want to do the whole
thing
anymore."
Mark nods. "I was 16 years old, man. I was not ready to move to
Chicago and
start playing the clubs."
Robben concurs. "I don't think I was ready for that."
The three went their separate directions, with Robben becoming the most
high-profile Ford. He worked with blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon and
later
followed his jazz fusion muse, forming the Yellow Jackets and playing
as a
member of Miles Davis' band for five-and-a-half months in 1986. ("It
was
great at first, but in the end it was a weird bunch of people that
weren't
friendly. It was a drag.")
Patrick formed the Ford Blues Band and also founded Blue Rock'it
Records,
which has recorded big-name blues artists including Charlie
Musselwhite and
Brownie McGhee, as well as the little-known (but profoundly talented)
Chris
Cain. Mark Ford, while recognized as one of the most powerful blues
harp
players in the world, never took to the musician's life and now works
as a
paramedic, performing with his brothers only when the mood strikes him.
As family life and solo-career constraints have allowed, the three
brothers
continue to tour and record as the Ford Brothers Band. They recently
released a tribute CD to Paul Butterfield, and another to Mike
Bloomfield on
Blue Rock'it. Those two discs mark something of a link in the chain
between
Muddy Waters and the Fords, as both Butterfield and Bloomfield were
champions of and disciples of Waters, and both played on his seminal
Fathers
and Sons record.
"Mike Bloomfield was my first guitar hero and Butterfield was Mark's
first
blues harp hero," Robben says.
Bassist Dewayne Pate and guitarist Volker Strifler round out the band
on
this tour, which includes dates in Germany. Robben says they will play
tunes
from the latest Ford Brothers Band CD, Center Stage, from each
brother's
solo CDs and from the Butterfield and Bloomfield records.
"It's a real smattering of all those things," he says. "This is going
to be
a little bit of everybody's stuff, a lot of fun."

Hi all,
have been listening to the Philly gig where J.R and A.G get it on
which was kindly recorded and made available by a fellow lister(i
think Gary H.) ,thanks sincerely.
What a performance ,wish I could have been there!
My question is this ,I know A.G is cited by Jason as being
instrumental in getting him turned onto o/b /o/ds,but listening to his
masterful playing on this particular show,Im not sure just how
extensively ,if at all ,he is employing these tecniques (A.G that is)
could anyone enlighten me on this point.?
Also does anybody know what kind of set-up he was using, great sound if
somewhat clean(no criticism here).
lastly ,anybody read his book "Satan's Apprentice"? Much harp content?
Ta in advance.
Sean.
