Re: [Harp-L] crystal or dynamic

That's not strictly true !

Yes Little Walter played through a Shure 545 as did Butterfield for some of the time.

But if you read the Linear notes of Butterfileds first album you will see that he used an Altec mic and a tweed Fender amp on that recording.
Not the fabled 545 and Fender Twin. Yet he still sounds the same !

Little Walter has been photographed using a Reslo ribbon mic.
Big Walter has been photographed using a Shure 545, an Astatic JT30 and a Argonne mic.

The point is that these players used what was available to them at the time and used a variety of equipment. They never used the same rig all the time. They too just like us today were constantly searching for that elusive sound ( the one that resides inside your mind ).

Take for example people like Kim Wilson or Rick Estrin both use a number of different mics and when on tour or recording in a foreign country cannot take their amp of choice. So they will use whatever is the best available gear at that time, as did Walter and the others.

But the one thing that the great players Like both Walters, Butterfield, Wilson , Estrin , etc, etc, knew was that the sound comes from inside of you the player not the gear.
