Ok.....I was probably the first to get a "knock off" copy of Bonfiglio's
"Harmonica America" CD as he recorded some of the drums tracks with Bernard
Purdie in my basement!
For those who only know him as a Master of Classical Harmonica, this is
a terrific project that showcases Robert in a nice cross section of
Americana & Popular Music. He plays both Diatonic and Chromatic with a
colorful backdrop provided by some of NY's finest Musicians in a small group
setting. There's even some cool Bonfiglio Vocals which are a rare treat and
tastefully done.
Bonfiglio was wise to include pop/folk icon Phoebe Snow on this CD as it
elevates the whole concept to a very soulful plateau. Her Vocals on "Over
the Rainbow", "Amazing Grace" and "America the Beautiful" are some of the
finest recordings of Phoebe ever, sung with emotion and masterfully
execution. Robert's tone and placement of Melody on these cuts, weave some
gorgeous musical vignettes of these Americam masterpieces....great choice of
tunes on the WHOLE record.
Last week I attended a tribute at the Bitter End in NYC for the late
Harmonica Player, Mindy Jostyn, Phoebe was there and sang almost this exact
version of "Over the Rainbow" with just a Pianist and she had the place in
total tatters and tears!
Purdie's drumming on "Johnny" (comes marchin home), "I should have
known Better" and "Juke" are an exercise in "track sweetening" Robert had
Bernard overdub the drums on these tracks and he came up with "spot on"
parts that sound like they were played as a band in a club!
Robert, congrats and best of luck with this project, and a fine
record.....maybe we can do a duet if you ever get around to doing "Harmonica
America" part two!!,-))
all the best,
rob paparozzi
