[Harp-L] Asking to Sit In (Was "I was playing my harmonica the other day")

Much like the long-lived "ebay sniping" debates of yore, the question of in sitting can be frought with opinions. It is difficult to create a hard rule on the subject*. 

I think Chris was right, in that there will always be harp players/owners coming up with something to prove.  I know I've sat by many times biting my tongue as harp players or singers put on less than stellar shows.  In those situations, I try to remind myself that this guy got the gig somehow.  He did, and I didn't .  So no matter how much potential I have, I should try to focus that energy on getting my own stuff together, instead of wanting to "smoke" him for the sake of my rampant ego.

I know we all ask to sit in sometimes.  I know some of us do/did it with over-inflated senses of self worth at times.  It can work out really well too.  Maybe I need to clarify my statement a bit more.  How about, "It's rude to ask to sit in while the band is playing.  It's better taste to make friends first and suggest sitting in over the break" ?   This topic's been covered before.  I was also just trying to distract from that other thread du jour.

 

 *(It is also a challenge to type while listening to this November JR show that is so convienently streaming on to my computer, getting me through work, and once again questioning my own sense of harmonica reality)
