[Harp-L] chromatic tone

Wondering what are the major contributing factors to
the distintive tone of a chro? I had thought the
valves played a part but I've half valved a few
diatonics and they retain their 'front porch' sound.
Also are there any modifications that can be made to
make a chromatic sound more like a 10 hole?
