Re: Fwd: [Harp-L] Jason Ricci/Pros
There certainly is a lot of texture to his notes. For example, there's
something that's ben bugging me about "Missippi Mood" from the Mexicali
Blues show. When he finishes his warmup flourishes and begins the main
melodic theme, played mostly on the first four holes, if you listen
carefully you can hear some upper register notes quietly slipped in
between the lower melodic line - almost as if they were accenting his
breathing / pauses. I know this is a picky question, but for anyone who
has heard this, do you have a clue what he's doing there? My theories -
he's playing the melody tongue blocked out of the left side of his mouth
and adding the high notes somehow (though physically very awkward - I've
tried) out of the right, or they're 'accidental' notes due to a very
tight seal. I dunno, really. I didn't even notice it until my dad (a
good musician and great 'ear') pointed it out to me. Whatever it is, I
can't imitate it. It turns a seemingly innocuous melodic line in to a
puzzle.... at least for me.

Yes, Jason does punctuate (hard attack with "T") most of his notes. This
gives more punch to his lines and is actually hard to do at the velocity
that he plays.

Power playing,
What seperates Jason Ricci and other great Pros Like William Clarke,
Rick
Estrin, Rod Piazza, etc. etc. etc. from most other players, especially
those
harmonica hackers who sound like them annoying pipe flute players, is
that Ricci
and the others are not afraid to seriously attack the notes that they
are
playing...When they begin a phrase, there is no pussyfootin around! I
could go
on and on - Nuff said for the moment? Please, CHIME IN...
