Bob, 
You mentioned Providence and I assume you went to see
the Nightcats at Chan's so you are not too far from
me. So I tell you what: come to one of my gigs, buy me
a beer (Bass draft or Heineken) and I'll let you sit
in.

I'll admit to desperately wanting to sit in with
certain bands. I think it's fair to say that almost
everyone who has sat in hoped that they would
beforehand. But I've never asked to and do not get
very disappointed when I do not.

I've mentioned this before when this thread has popped
up. A good rap will go a lot further than asking. Just
by introducing myself and enegaging the performer in
polite conversation that shows I am a knowledgable
musician and a low key guy I usually get asked to sit
in. Having said that beware the good rap. I've had too
many cats lay "I've played with so and so" etc on me
and I've asked them to sit in and politely dismiss
them from the stage after one tune because they can't
cut it.
