The key to playing a solo in any style of music is singing.  Sing a 
phrase, then play it.  While improvising, try to play what a singer would 
sing.  Playing like the human voice is the key to phrasing and what all 
instrumentalists strive to acheive.

I watched Lee Konitz take a group of Bebop alto sax players through a 
singing over changes and then playing what you sing routine and it opened 
my eyes.

In classical music, I always sing what I play, even in my head while I 
play it.
