Hi, MHH.

To your first question, Toot's uses the standard harmonicas with his 
name on: the Hohner Toots Hard Bopper and the Hohner Toots Mellow Tone. 
He plays the standard solo layout.

About alternate tuning, I suggest you take a look at the diminished tuning.
