[Harp-L] Re: Harp-L Digest, Vol 22, Issue 23 Practice Schedule to Kevin Keith

I have a practice schedule that has produced excellent results.
Lay out about five or six things you want to work on. Example: scales, repertoire, one new song a week or a month (depends on the difficulty of the tune), a riff or segment of some tune that's been hanging you up, playing along with recordings(really listen and try to duplicate phrasing and intonation of other instruments. Give each of these segments ten or fifteen minutes. It's easy to like something and start doing it for an hour or so and neglecting the other aspects of your regimen. It happens to me but I try to stick with the regimen as best I can. It's very rewarding to see results in different aspects of your playing. You can add or subtract from this schedule as fits your needs. You may want to spend time on sight reading or transposing. How about taking an easy piece and playing it in all 12 keys. It's an adventure to find out which keys work best and why. In any case stick to 10-15 min maximum on any of your choices. Let me know if you like this idea and how it works out for you.

Just wondering if anyone has tried the "BOOR HARP CRADLE" that's sold
at the Best Lil Harp House website?

http://www.harphouse.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=418

This is a new-to-me harp-holder offering. I have just ordered one for
"competitive evaluation" and will report on it...even if my report will be
suspect. After I evaluate it, it will be for sale at a substantial
discount.

IMO, a harp holder needs three adjustments:

1. Up/Down. From the picture it appears that the "dog chain" neck yoke can
be raised or lowered and meets this ciiterion.
2. In/Out. It appears that this is met by shortening or lengthening of the
"dog chain".
3. Harp angle. I see no provision in the picture for harp angle adjustment.

It appears to obscure a very large part of the performer's face.

Visit my harmonica website: http://www.Hands-Free-Chromatic.7p.com to see my
Ergonomic-Neck-Rack for comparison. I modestly admit that my ENR is, so far,
the "gold standard" of neck racks and has been welll received by not only
chromatic but also diatonic players. Although their numbers are few, their
enthusiasm is high. The Boor Cradle might possibly put an end to that
claim. If this $27 (delivered) rack has adequate stability and
adjustability for the Hands-Free-Chromatic, I will recommend it and cease
the in-garage production of my $200 Ergonomic-Neck-Rack.

I have not posted in a couple of years, however still a faithful reader of
the posts. I had to comment on the jam at MAGGIES PLACE in Doylestown PA.
Great room , great folks, even better players. Mike Gulden ( sp?) runs a fun
jam with a great flow on and off the stage. There was a group who played
called " THE MOJO GYPIES" WWW.MOJOGYPIES.COM ther set was full of little
Charlie, Paul Delay, Ray Charles's " GREENBACK DOLLAR BILLS' groove from
start to finish. Jim Quilan ( sp?) thier singer did a fine job on harp and
vox and backed by some stellar musicians. He palyed a RE10 through a ALLAN
tube amp thick creamy tone that would bite you in ass when needed. I had the
honor of using his rig and I must now go get an RE10 to stay happy.

If you ever get a chance to go to see these guys do it!

Gary H. It is Chris from the Orphan Annies jam email mail me if you are
thnking of catching Pat Ramsey's show later this month at this place.
Perhaps we can get this recorded like the J Ricci shows.

Perhaps
if these harps were $5.99 it would be OK.

Ironically, the Blues Band and Pocket Pal (and Old Standby and GLH and on and on) are less than $5.99, and they have the same design as the Special 20.

I think Hohner's idea was to make one design that they could use to
replace several of their non-MS models, which included the Blues
Harp and the Meisterklasse, which were traditional sandwich design
(like the Marine Band) as well as the full-mouthpiece models like
the Pro Harp and the Cross Harp. It's hard to make a single design
of plate that can be both overhanging and recessed. It's hard to
make a recessed mouthpiece in a wood comb and in a metal comb. So
overhanging won out.

Due to a recent rash of late gig announcements and more than a couple user
complaints I've decided to declare a moratorium on ANY gig announcements
to the list until further notice. If it's not on Danny's list please do
not write the list individually. Discussions regarding a more formalised
policy are in process and we may be polling the membership to see what you
want in this area. Please do feel free to writre me and express your
opinion on this subject. Ideas are very much welcomed. Please do use the
list to announce a CANCELLED or changed venue gig. After today anyone
using harp-l to announce a gig will get a polite note from the owner
reminding them of our current policy on this subject and asking them to
please use Danny Wilson's gig list for future gig announcements. This is
a temporary policy, a premanent solution will be forthcoming. Thanks, fjm

I was wondering if there is any detailed history on Marine Bands, or even
slightly more than vague....
When did they stop production of the "mouse ear" harps?
How many different Hohner portraits were there?
Some other stuff I'd like to know now that I have a few...I'm finding
several differences among the pre-wars that I find interesting. And they
make killer harps when I'm done with them.

To those of you in Rochester (my hometown), a month or so ago I put a

City Newspaper - he's a Blues writer / musician and had never heard of
JR - and woulldn't you know it, he asked me for more info and did a nice

There has been some recent talk about a 'certain' sound that some harp
players can get:variously described as a pulse or beat of a vamp underlying
the note
I love this sound but just can't seem to generate it to any degree even
when i do the most commonly outlined method of a tongue slap,it just ain't
the same.
Here is a link to what i think is a good example of the
'sound' In the first 20 seconds of the song it really comes out.
Anyone got an exact description of what michael is doing
here?
I think i know,albeit i can't do it,but would love someone to
actually spell it out as it were.

================================

Guys, this is a VERY important lesson!

I've been involved in various facets of the print media for nearly 15 years,
trust me on this: If you spoon feed info to music writers and editors, the
odds of them writing about your band/gig/CD/etc. SKYROCKET!!! I cannot
stress this enough. If you want to promote a gig of yours, track down any
and all writers who might be inclined to cover it -- give them a CD, an info
packet, PHOTOS ... anything you can. These folks love music but, in the end,
laziness often rules the day (hey, they were out covering a gig last night
and didn't get home till after 3, right?). So if, over their 11 a.m.
"morning" coffee, they see on their desk a packet of info on your band
complete with a couple nice pics -- voila! -- instant story. Gets their
editor off their back, promos your gig, readers get a nice story ......
everyone's happy. But this starts with YOU. If you don't make the effort,
readers get another lame story about the latest cheesy pop idol or
cowboy-hatted "country" singer with capped teeth and a tanning-booth tan.

Hello Everyone,
I have been floundering as far as practicing habits go.I'll intend on say just practicing chromatic tunes.I'll play a few and hear a great tune next on a certain cd.Now all of a sudden I am sidetracked to this totally different tune(but still loving it). I am sure some of you are with me on this.Is there anyone who can put some sort of practice system that works for them into understandable english for me..I know it depends on what you are trying to achieve of course, like 1st pos.,3rd,2nd,slow tunes, fast, swings.( And then theres singing).I seem to be all over the map.I would like to excell in all of the above like most of us.I listen alot to Little Walter,Kim Wilson,Mark Hummell,Gary Primich,Rod Piazza and the people that influenced them.I'm just entering the world of chromatic. It seems to be overwhelming.Do I stick to with a certain artist for a month,do I stick to first pos for a week or a month,do I only play chromatic for a week?I'll practice these tunes thinking I ca!
n do this with these guys. Then these guys fall apart.Or I go to a jam and the guys don't know the tunes etc.I know the practicing of these tunes doesn't go in vain because if you have to revisit them the general foundation is in place.Do I need an instructor, mentor, shrink, more patience, all of the above,or can you guys help with some sort of practice system that has worked for you.Thank You Everyone who may contribute. Slim,

Your right, that's a definite "Stevie-ism"....

Try clicking the tip of your tongue of the top of your upper palette, 1st
without the harp and you'll get a a sort of click-pop sound effect. Then,
take a few notes on the chromatic (upper register works best above 5).

When you first hear it it sounds like his giving the harp short staccato
type "Kisses" but it's really the technique above.......

The Plucking in his version of 'Alfie' is awesome!

Good Luck............
