RE: [Harp-L] To Elizabeth & playing without pain
Hi Elizabeth and Rudene
I had to give up my teaching job in 1997 due to arthritis - this started in
my knees but now affects my hands, wrists and back as well. Apropos
harmonica-playing, the main impact was that it stopped me from using a large
hand-held mic, so I now get by with a tiny lapel mic. I've also educated
myself into adopting a far more relaxed posture when playing though I have
some way to go on this still. Waking up with a stiff neck after sessions
was my wake-up call here! I take standard NSAID medication (diclofenac)
along with an anti-ulcer drug to protect my stomach. I'm aware of the risks
of this regime and I constantly discuss it with my doctor, but the
alternative is to live with considerable and debilitating pain. I found
that the glucosamine/chondroitin treatment was ineffective for me. I've
found that the best thing for my sense of well-being overall (apart from
harmonica-playing!) is to keep as physically-active as I can, the
possibilities for which vary on a day-to-day basis. Keeping the muscles
strong around the affected joints seems to be pretty important. You won't
be seeing me in the London Olympics but I'm still moving!

Elizabeth & all others,
Right on with the liquid joint maintenance. I started taking a similar
liquid Nov. '04. I had taken the pill/capsule form since 2001 because of a
severe auto accident, and had attained some relief. I had given my aged
dog the liquid form because of method of deliverance. Sadly he passed Nov.
1, 2004 of old age. Not wanting to "waste" the liquid I started taking it
and much to my surprise I felt so much better. So-----I stopped the
pills/capsules and have been on the liquid ever since.
Folks, this does work. The MSM is sulfur that is needed for healing & the
immune system. All the ingredients work together. The body can't help but
use the liquid form; the pill form does not always dissolve.
The product I use is Vitamin World Liquid Joint Maintenance & for a no cost
membership I go to the Vitamin World at the mall on the first Mon & Tues
for 30% to 40% off.
When we feel better then we play harp better.
As always, check with your physician.
Best regards & keep on harpin'
Rudene
