For Immediate Release:
SAM MYERS BLUES BENEFIT TO BE HELD AT GRANADA THEATER
FRIDAY, AUGUST 26
âHelp Out Our âBrother Samâ Battling Cancerâ
(DALLAS, TX â July 15, 2005) - On Friday, August 26, the Granada Theater in
Dallas, Texas will host a fundraiser for legendary blues artist Sam Myers.
Myers was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2005, and has been unable to
perform with his infamous band, Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets, since December of
2004. Myers, best known as a blues vocalist and harmonica player, has been
with The Rockets as their featured vocalist since 1986. Myers, along with The
Rockets, have collectively won nine W. C. Handy-awards which are equivalent to
the Grammy awards.
The benefit will feature Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets. Funderburgh, has
been instrumental in organizing this fundraiser, and has invited his friends
and special guests, Little Milton, Delbert McClinton and Jimmy Vaughan, to join
in. The Sam Myers Benefit will also feature HashBrown & the Browntones,
Mike Morgan & the Crawl and The Texas Horns.
All proceeds from the benefit will go towards the massive medical costs that
have poured in from Myersâ battle with cancer. The costs include continued
medical care, treatments and follow-up Doctor visits.
A silent auction will be held throughout the night to bring in additional
monies to benefit Sam Myers. Dean Guitars has donated an electric Bass guitar
and electric six-string guitar, which will be autographed by the performing
artists at the benefit, and auctioned off. Donations are also being collected by
Brian âHashBrownâ Calway and Renee Funderburgh and include original blues
photos from Dick Waterman and much more.
General admission and reserved seating tickets will go on sale, this
Saturday, July 16, thru the Granada website, www.granadatheater.com and also available
at CD World. The Granada Theater is located at 3524 Greenville Avenue,
Dallas, Texas 75206 and has been a landmark in the Dallas area for many years.
Sam Myers has been performing as a blues artist since his late teens dating
back to the early 1950âs. Performing for more than fifty years, Myers has
dedicated his life to the blues. Myers, a Dallas resident since the mid-eighties,
was a former drummer with blues-great Elmore James and has performed with
countless others. It is only fitting that the Dallas and Fort Worth communities
come together to help this legendary artist out on Friday, August 26.
If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation to Sam Myers, the
Southwest Blues Heritage Foundation, Incorporated (SWBHF, Inc.), is set up to
receive your donation. Checks can be made out to Southwest Blues Heritage
Foundation, Inc., (SWBHF, Inc.) with your check memo noted âSam Myersâ and mailed
to: P. O. Box 710548, Dallas, Texas 75371-0548.
Anson & The Rockets along with Sam Myers would like to thank all those who
have supported their band for more than nineteen years. They also thank
everyone who has called and kept Sam in prayers throughout this year.
