My two cents - I agree with the fine advice, and I would add.... that it is very beneficial to record yourself during the jam. If you take the tape home and listen to it - it should seem obvious whether it sounds "right" or not. It will help you to identify these finer points of when and where for your future jams.
In my opinion, nothing beats the "naked truth" of listening to your own performance after the beer wears off. =)
