My experience has been that yes, thicker reed plates do give you more volume 
and IMHO a nicer, snappier response, but the downside is that your reeds 
will wear out faster (given that the reeds are of the same material, size, 
etc.)  I'm not sure about overblows but to me, it seems like they're a 
little tougher on thicker plates...I'll admit that I haven't done a lot of 
comparision on this.  Probably some careful attention to properly setting 
the reed gap/offset could remedy this though.  Reed gapping/offset has a big 
effect on the ability for a harp to overblow well.
