Re: [Harp-L] high end mics for harmonica recording

At a much lower price point than the Neumann mics mentioned by Robert
Bonfiglio, I'm very fond of the Audio-Technica AT 4050 CM5. This is a
large diaphragm condensor that runs on +48V phantom power, so requires a
preamp with phantom power. It retails at about $600, can be found used
in good condition for around $500.

This mic produces a smooth, detailed sound, without noticeable hyping in
the high end. I'm especially impressed by the warm but not mushy sound
it captures on mid-range chording on diatonic harps. Coupled with even
an inexpensive tube preamp like the ART Tube MP, it can produce a full,
almost lush sound that's very nice for chromatic and diatonic lead work.

My recording of "Bela's World" from my CD "The Second Act of Free Being"
was recorded with this mic, and the warm clarity of that recording is a
good example of what I like about the AT 4050.

That said, if you can afford Avalon preamps and a Nuemann U47 (or Lawson
MP47, or...insert the high end mic of your choice), don't hesitate.
It's certainly a better long-term investment than a comparably priced
car.
