[Harp-L] Re : Huang Starperformer

Eric Lubeck Asked about the Huang Sterperformer :

"
Hey List,
I've recently fallen in love with the golden melody harp after a
brief stint with Bushmans. My harp searching quests primary goal was to find a good overblow harp and suprisingly, despite favorable reviews I found the overblows of the Bushman too be very squeaky and weak out of the box. Golden melodys hav ea great shape and are easy too tune for precise overblowing and speed.

I was wondering if the Huang Starperformer, which seems to be the
only golden melody clone on the market, is any good. I can competantly
work reeds at this point, so OOB quality is less important than overall
quality of a harmonica. And if you didn't guess, price is important too. "

Hurricane Sez :

Hello Eric ,

Seems like your in the " experienced " group now and now know a tweak or two to get any harp up to " speed " with reed gappin & stuff so , you are a great candidate to evaluate a harp .

The Huang Starperformer is a really great harp as well as the Silvertone , and as in the case of ANY harmonica I test em before I buy them . The Starperformer and I go back to the early 80's , I use the buggers to death . they are as a I said before " a power harp for a power player " . You need strong powerful lungs to get this bird to really chirp , a in the case of the Hohner " Golden Melody " , they do have similarities , but that is to be judged by you and or an audience ( which in most cases don't know a thang bout harps ) . Haungs are first in my quiver of harps then the other garden variety Hohners , Suzukis & Lee Oskars that fit into the power harp category . Hope this helps . They hold up remarkably well in regards to their longevity as far as I know personally , I get more milage out of them than the others bar none ( YMMV ? ) and as your last line indicates :

" The Price Is Right " ! ! !

1982 is the year I got my first complete 12 pack of them , 23 years later I still use them . I did however buy a CBH2016 chromatic ( 2 of them :) long before I got the diatonics , so I was full aware just how good they company were potentially .

Sincerely :

Hurricane Ramón
