I often wonder how much a regular touring musician really makes. I know a few sidemen who get paid very little, even though they tour regularly. I wonder how the leaders do? I don't want to single anyone out, but say you're in the category of a Musselwhite, Wilson, Piazza, Ricci in that you're touring steadily but not yet a celebrity like Popper. Can you make a real living with enough money to have health insurance, pay a mortgage, car loan and put the kids through braces and college? Or is it more of a hand-to-mouth existence?
