[Harp-L] Re : re: jazz on a diatonic

Excerpt .
" I would contend that East West is jazz, along the lines of the modal Coltrane work and that Butterfield had a viable approach to jazz on the diatonic--without overblows or specially tuned harps. Ditto Work Song. "

Yep , too many time critics ( musicians & non players ) make this stipulation or that about what diffines Jazz , The Blues , and the musicians who do play it or don't play it in their tunnel visioned and sometimes ( most of the time it seems to me ) blind eyes and or deaf ears .
And then some one as off the wall as Monk jumps in -- need I say more .
Jazz is diffined by the players and those who either dig some ones chops or don't simply put .
Louis Armstrong , many don't think of as a Blues musician and only think of him as a Jazz man while there were many from the school of Dizzy and his take on Bop and those who were in Dizzy's camp considered Louis not to be a " Jazz " musician ( or a really gooooooood Jazz man ) and only a Blues musician - - now that kind of mentality sounds like $h&t to me . Later Dizzy showed profound respect for Louis on there very first public playing encounter - - It was recorded too for posterity :)
Music is a giant big box and inside this treasure chest box lay the gems of music , take your choice , if it's daimonds yor after so be it , if it's gold your after right on , and then there are those want and like diamonds and gold and silver and what ever because each of the treasures ( jazz , Blues . et all ) are all individually wonderful and valid to those who validate them .
A Rose is a Rose is a Rose , call it a cactus , call it a cucumber call it what you may - - it still smells wonderful don't it .
Rainbow Jimmy , your in my musical neighborhood man right on right on right on !
Sincerely :
H . R .
