[Harp-L] Hendrik on Jazz
I think the person who lives exclusively in the current jazz world Hendrik
Meurkins. I sure his discussion of what jazz is would be a broad tent,
but the current practice might be a narrow definition, driven by Winton,
and the market place.
The Burns documentary blew off all fusion, Wheather Report, Miles when he
left Bebop, etc. This is not even to mention the "free jazz" and squeaks
and farts players of the late 60's. This Burns definition of jazz is more
like classical music, i.e., kind of a museum approach.
What jazz "is" may end up more being where it's racked in Tower and who
would book your group. East-West would still end up an extention of blues
in both cases.
Totally off subject, I found a picture of John Lennon playing bass
harmonica and George playing chord probably on A Benefit for Mr. Kite.
Also, I never knew that when Dylan went electric, the Butterfield Band was
the backup guys.
Harmonically yours,
