Scooter's solution to the broken chromatic button sounds
like the best solution.
 
Unfortunately, I lack the skill (and the talent)  to attempt  brazing
the cut-off Phillips button to the slide.  Here's what worked  for
me:
 
I found a hex nut (stainless would be nice) with the appropriate 
I.D. to just fit over the narrowed end of the slide where the button
had broken off.  Then I  filled the cavities on both  sides  of the
slide with steel epoxy--the kind that comes in a cardboard tube
and you knead to mix it with the activator.
 
Not as pretty but it's quick and it works.
