How do you "open up" cover plates, and what tools do I need to try it?

I use a small hammer with a soft metal head that I got with the Farrel
reed removal kit. I have heard it called a jewelers hammer.
I take the cover plates off, flip them over, and lightly tap the flap
of metal at the back to fold it against the top of the cover plate.
Work all along the length, bending a little bit at a time. I support
the plate on the edge of a wood table that has a gently rounded edge.
I put some soft rubber tape on the table edge. It works great after a
bit of practice.
