RE: [Harp-L] Trolls, Lists and Gratitude
In response to Sam Blancato's question: A troll is a frightening creature
who lives under a bridge and sometimes shows itself after dark to certain
persons as a service, so that they can face their fears and build their
courage. I am not an expert on the details of tales about trolls, but I
believe that they are not actually dangerous, but appear to be in order to
get the maximum effect from the service that they perform. The term "troll"
isn't limited to list serve lingo. Trolls appear in folklore, especially
childrens stories.
This is my second submission to the list. In this comment, I am more
confident of the accuracy of what I wrote than I was in the the first. In
the first submission, because I had owned a music venue for a few years, I
thought that I knew enough to give advice on how harp players who are
playing out in clubs could increase their revenue. What I said might not be
appropriate for everybody, maybe not even appropriate for anybody. What I
said was that developing more of an entreprenurail approach pays off in the
longrun.
One of the people who responded to my submission pointed out that I might be
advocating a style that just resulted in more money for me and less for the
performer and that I might really love money more than music. Maybe so. I
concluded a long time ago that other people can see you better than you can
see yourself. So, to be honest, I have to acknowledge that the facts behind
the theory that I advanced, might cause an objective observer to conclude
that I am just a greedy upstart trying to get attention here on the list
rather than trying to be of genuine help. Before I sent the first
submission, I had examined the facts of my business history, from my own
subjective perspective, and exonerated myself of the sins that my
commentator described. When I read another persons perspective, I was
tempted to defend myself. But there is no future in that. A more objective
reading of the facts might prove that I was just trying to feather my own
nest.
So I am grateful to the person who suggested that my motives might be
suspect. I have been reading the submissions of that person and listened to
his music. He's a good player. I have learned from what he has put on line,
both to me and to other persons, so I want to thank him. Especially I want
to thank him for reminding me that I might be a victim of self-deception, a
common ailment among more than harp-players.

A troll in internet usergroup terms is usually the resident know-it-all who
hangs out on a particular list and is very rude to others, generally the
type that has other frustrations or sociological problems and enjoys the
anonymity of hiding behind their keyboard and being able to say things to
people that they'd never have the guts to say in person. So say someone new
comes on the list and asks a novice question. The troll would immediately
seize on this opportunity to answer with some supposed humorous and quite
humiliating to the newbie response to make themselves feel better in their
dominant knowledge of the subject, and be a big-shot to the other troll
wanna-bes on the list that shower the troll with idol worship because of
their knowledge, etc. something like that. Most discussion lists have more
than one, at least one though. Think in terms of the troll in the Lord of
the Rings, the one with the big club. Watch out Mr. Frodo!
Harp content: See, after three years on this list you don't know what that
is. Because we don't have one!

""And now cried Max, let the wild rumpus start "." Are you referencing
Where the Wild Things Are? That has to be a first on this list. BTW I'm not
really up on list serve lingo. What's a troll?
