Re: [Harp-L] SPAH jazz jams
Hi All,
I have been attending the SPAH jazz jam sessions since Randy Singer hosted
the first one in 1998. I just wanted to issue a challenge to all those
diatonic jazz players who are coming to SPAH. George represents a whole
host of diatonic players who are fantastic jazz players. I am letting every
diatonic player know that, if you get up and play and you DON'T come
off-stage with a smile . . . I will buy you a drink! I have played plenty
of terrible solos (and even a few good ones) at the SPAH jams and never came
off without a smile. Also, I have noticed a distinct interest on the part
of chromatic players as to what the diatonic players are doing.
This year should be an excellent year for jazz. there are plenty of good
players lined up and even the least experienced chromatic player know he has
to take his place in line to play us all a tune. In fact, despite all the
very fine players there, the SPAH jazz jams have always been about giving
the beginner a really good chance to play with a great piano player or
rhythm section. If you are a beginner or you just don't get to play with
real pros often enough, the SPAH jazz jam is the perfect place for you! I
attend specifically because I have a chance to share my love of jazz with
other harmonica players, but I look forward to playing with as professional
rhythm section as can be found. It is a real pleasure to play at the SPAH
jazz jams and, if you find that to be different, then I owe you a good stiff
drink!
Michael
Hi, all-
I have been assigned the enjoyable task of MCing the jazz jams at SPAH KC
this year. There will be a jazz jam on Thursday night immediately
following the evening show. It should run from about 10:30 to 12:30, and
on this night we have a trio (piano, bass and drums). There will be a jam
with piano only on Friday night, again starting right after the evening
show and going to 12:30.
You can bet that these jams will be diatonic friendly. If you are
attending SPAH, please come by and call a tune.
George
