gear everyone is using and whether or not to continue the PC route or which

Apple is going to start using Intel processors, but it will continue to use its own operating system. Macs will look the same.

As far as gear, it depends on how much you want to spend. You can put together a home system for anywhere from about $200 to whatever you can afford. I have a budget system using Ntrack Studio for recording and mixing, a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card, a cheap mixer (so I can use the line input on the sound card,) a Cad C-95 mic that I also use as a vocal mic on stage, and freeware mp3 ripping software. It's far better than the best reel to reel tape recorder I ever had. It's nowhere near pro gear, but I can do all the post production work I want to do--reverb, compression, eq, and balance--for acoustic stuff. It's not what you'd get from a pro studio, but it's plenty good enough for a demo to shop around or for making mp3s.

I'm currently mixing a demo with an electric band recorded at a trade school for media--like a barber college hair cut. It's surprisingly easy to do if you're looing for something that just sounds like everyone was in the same room. Fortunately the drum tracks were well balanced by the students at the board.
