hey all,
yesterday i got hipped to a last minute gig in NYC
by Rob Paparozzi at a new BBQ joint, Dinosaur BBQ on
131st and 12th Ave (just a couple blocks up from the
Cotton Club). i guess Livinsgton Leo, a guitar player
and singer who was fronting the band last night,
invited Rob to sit in. i'm not really sure of the
backstory. in any case, when my wife and i showed up
the party was in full swing. i'm not sure what tune
Rob was playing, but he, the drummer, the organist,
and another guitairst (not Leo) were burning through a
very funky blues. then Rob and the guys played "Cissy
Strut," a Meters classic, with Rob playing the "head"
on diatonic and some killer solos. they sounded
amazing. Leo came up and did a few tunes with Rob and
the guys providing backup, then Rob came back on with
a killer-funky instrumental version of "Ticket To
Ride" and Rob's own version of "Leavin' Trunk." we had
to take off at that point 'cause it was going to be a
long ride home, but it was a great night.
for anyone in the Jersey, NYC area that hasn't seen
Rob, he's a great performer and musician. considering
how well he sings, how he rips up a diatonic harp solo
(not to mention he jazzes on chromatic and plays some
piano too!) i can hardly believe he's not mentioned
more often on the lists. in any case, i recommend his
shows to anyone who loves whatever style of music he's
playing at any given gig. and say hi when you see him,
he's a real nice guy to boot.
