Re: [Harp-L] overblow begginner question

Hi Bill,

If you do it right, the sound wont change noticeably. The harp becomes more responsive to low pressure. Also it is easier to bend. You need a lot less air which is great. Heavy playing may cause a blocked feeling.

Learning to play with close gaps can take some getting use to. Its not for everybody; some guys like to play hard.

As an example the first harp I gapped, I gapped really really low which made the OBs quite easy. But honestly, the harp was not a good harp for blues playing after that as it would choke on blow notes. Well not quite a choke, just some back pressure and the sound gets muddy. Trick is to learn to play OBs with a wider and wider gap. My second OB harp was a Turbo AX from the guys at Turbo harp. I hardly had to do anything to the harp only the 3 hole. The nice thing with the Turbo AX is that it has a really nice even feel to it. The gaps go progressively up. My attempt was really lame in comparison. I think it like rolling cigarettes, the first 1000 are really shitty :-)

(I don't smoke anymore)

As far as I am concerned I would never play a harp out of the box, at the very least, I find the 1, 2 and 3 holes too hard to play on a stock SP20. Way too much air goes out that way.

Its definitely an art to gap a harp perfectly, use an old harp.

Pierre.

When you tweak the harp for OB do you then change anything about the
standard blow/draw or bent notes on those holes, i.e do they still sound
like they did berore the tweak?

Like Chris implied: all Hohner handmade harps can be hit or miss. I just
taught a student how to OB and the GM I had him buy was terrible. I tweaked
a S20 for him and he was off and running.
IMO, MS series & Hering are similar in their OB weaknesses as the LOs &
Huangs.

Be careful, it's music.
Have fun, it's only music.
