Re: [Harp-L] Re: Magic Dicks fender red knob twin
I agree w/ MN here, Chuck, hold off on the "Rig" situation....MORE
important right now is shedding the repetoire!
Pick 3 songs a week:
Start with ie:
Cruisin' For a Love
Pack Fair and Square
Homework
also, give listens to the 'live' versions, but LEARN the song FIRST off the
Studio Versions so you can really get a handle. Dick told me that you should
always practice with a small rig by your stereo and hold her Mic throughout
all this shedding as there alot of Micing and Amped tonalities and sublties
that you'll catch by doing so. I think this is good advice and it worked
well for me when I was playing this stuff back in the 70's.
Set aside a bit of the practice time to devote to Little Walter
records.....Dick borrowed "heavily" from him but really took in a very
'Tumpet' like direction as well
so seek out some early Armstrong and start listening.
Then go back to Dick and listen to how he approaches Armstrong's solo on
"I'm Not Rough" (Monkey Island)
It's a Masterful rendition with articulation to die for!!!!
When your ready to get the rig contac me offlist and we'll do a
conference call with Pierre Beaureguard who hung, traveled and worked alot
of Dick's gear for years......and get HIS input!
hope this helps,
best,r

For what it's worth, I definitely wouldn't go buying that amp unless you
really want another large amp or are getting a tremendous price on it
(i.e. as sort of an investment). First of all, Dick played concerts and
recorded albums with the J. Geils band with all sorts of gear. In Kim
Fields' book, Dick even said he liked recording with a Champ so clearly
that's the amp you're hearing on at least some of their studio stuff. And
you've already seen the other posts where he's reported to have used
various mics (SM57 for instance). Chasing down Magic Dick's tone by
chasing down the gear he used is going to be futile (and expensive). You
already have a great amp in that Sonny Jr.-modded Bassman RI. If you're
going to really play the Magic Dick part, I think you'd be better off
spending the money on a nice echo/delay pedal and a few pairs of leather
pants. ;-)
