"I would like to give to a musician friend of mine a CD of harmonica
music that really demonstrates the virtuosity of some of the great
players (any/all genres). Any suggestions?"

I have a disc called "Blowing the Blues" that I think is pretty great,
although a bit short. It has tracks like "No Way Out" by Sonny Boy II (Rice
Miller), "Roller Coaster" by Little Walter, "Room to Move" by John Mayall
(my favorite track), and "Sitting on Top of the World" by Howlin' Wolf. I
bought it at a normal music store, so it's probably easy to find. I have
another disc called "Crucial Blues Harmonica" that is not so good overall,
but it does have a couple of excellent tracks from Cephas & Wiggins and
Little Charlie & His Night Cats.

"I''d like to pass on to my violinist friend the
names of pieces that have been intenionally written for harmonica.
Anyone know?

Thanks, Rene"

There are lots of old pieces for chromatic harmonica, though I haven't heard
any of them. The only concerto for diatonic harmonica was written by Howard
Levy, who performs it a couple times each year. I saw it in Nashville this
past November, and it is really impressive and beautiful stuff. I don't
know if there other, non-concerto pieces for diatonic, but I doubt it.

Michael Fugazzi, you said pretty much what I said in my 1st post after I listened to the MP3s on the site. I agree with you.

I think Shakin' Smith sounded like a fine player from the MP3s on his site, clearly influenced by SBWII, but I didn't think he broke much new ground based on the MP3s on the site.

*And I think that's OK*

I'm pretty much a blues harp guy. I most enjoy the way blues harp fits in as part of the whole, interacting with the groove, calling and responding to others in the band, acting as a rhythm instrument, taking the melody, etc, etc, etc.

While as a harp player I try to keep up with some of the newer approaches to the instrument (from a sort of - gee whiz, how'd he do THAT? maybe I can work that into the music I hear in my head - perspective), I have to admit that some of the newer approaches don't really grab me - but hey, that's personal preference.

i'd argue (and hope) that it's because of that, not in spite of.
and that's why it's important that folks like you and richard
let people know about great service, as you have. companies that spend
the money and effort to provide great service should be rewarded,
and those who care about great service should vote with their wallets
to ensure it continues.

I have a Hering Harmonica in the key of A that I never learned
to play. I am going to take a vacation for a few weeks soon.
and plan to bring it with me to figure it out...

Any tips on how I can figure it out? Would like any links to
beginners songs that I could learn to play, or some online
tutorials or something.

Any advice appreciated!!!

try fanrfarrell.com
Meanwhile, you can get very good tools at harponline.de

But the tools are nothing if you do not get used to use your main tool: Brain.

There ain't much difference with the debate about what is or what ain't
blues than there is with fans of other genres of music.

I was invited to see Ricky Scaggs Saturday night. I'm not a huge fan of
bluegrass music, but I do enjoy listening to it. I certainly am not in a
position to critique musicians that play in that genre, but he and his band
Kentucky Thunder smoked--an example of world class musicians at work. He
mentioned that they won a Grammy in the country category and it puzzled him
because he said that it was a straight up bluegrass album. He also said
that what they do, though, is a heck a lot more of what country used to be
than what passes as such today.

When he asked the crowd if they would mind if he went back to the '40s and
whipped some Bill Monroe out there was a resounding Heck No! Huge applause!
This crowd was there to hear bluegrass played the way it was suppose to be.
He said that there were those that worked on him to pumped out some original
tunes, but he said that with so much good stuff to cover that he found it
hard to do. His most recent album is chock full of 'em (with a few of the
classics thrown in) and he and the band whomped a few of those out. Were
they innovative? Nope, just solid kick butt bluegrass played very well.
Could he venture off into uncharted territory to be more innovative?
Without a doubt. He chooses not to..

There are some world class blues musicians out there that choose to do the
same (harp content: some of them play blues harp) and some of us like it
like that. There are also those of us that need the extra git up and go,
and that's fine too. I know this--No One left the Scaggs show complaining
about a lack of innovative musicianship. Anyway--

See ya--
Rick

Hello friends,

I've lost count of how many shows that I have caught by him - Even had the pleasure to go to his hotel room after one of his "Like Buzz said,,, INSPIRING GIGS" and eat baloney sandwiches with him, while he critiqed his performance of that evenings show that he taped onto a cassette during the gig...

He has payed some serious dues over the span of his long career as a bluesman!!! Studabaker John is the real deal, not a slice of bull$%^# in his vast repitore of songs. He'll probally die with a harp in his mouth, a song on his lips and a guitar slung over his shoulder - Ya you read that right, he can do it all - the big boys call em a triple threat. Look up his side work that he's also done with other great blues artists!!!

Sincerely,

Frank

Frank

OK, now I don't want to start (or re-start) anything here. I've forgotten
who was in charge of the "disc," or I'd have emailed him/her off-list. It's
been a while since I've heard anything about it, and am wondering if it will
ever come to pass.
Again, don't mean to start, restart, imply, impugn, in- or im- anything.
Just asking.
Thanks.

No dowdabowdit! St. Louis was my second Jam Camp. I had been to the Jam
Camp in Atlanta just 2 months ago and had some worries about whether it
would make sense to go to another one so soon. It made plenty sense. I
learned just as much and I feel like I moved even farther in my playing.
Jon is a great teacher and he knows how to pick 'em. I would second Mike's
comments about the faculty. Where else can you have both one-on-one and
small group lessons with teachers the caliber of those guys? The whole
atmosphere of Jam Camp is one of acceptance, generosity and support. An
overwhelmingly positive experience. Do it if you can.

I am relatively new to the harmonica. I have been trying to learn the harp
(self taught) and found myself struggling. After reading numerous posts
here, I decided to spend some hard earned money on some help, instead of
just hanging it up, and attend Jon Gindick's Jam Camp in St. Louis.

Upon arrival, I felt somewhat intimidated with the other harp players that
were in attendance. These guys and gals were way over my head. However, as
the camp proceeded, I was right at home with the other campers, learning
different techniques, for the proficient campers this was probably a
refresher, for me it was instruction.

The instructors (Jon Gindick, Adam Gussow, Dennis Gruenling, John Costa and
Dave Mulford of the Piping Hot Biscuits of Blues) were phenomenal, and
really spent the time with each camper to help them learn and develop the
skills they were seeking to acquire. The ultimate close to the Jam Camp was
the Sunday Jam. The local band (The Piping Hot Biscuits of Blues) supported
each camper in the Jam session. WOW - Unbelievable!

This is definitely an event that Harmonica players of all skill levels,
looking to move to the next level, should attend. Jon et al, thank you very
much for the most enjoyable and instructional weekend! I'll be back!

Mike

My CDs "The Act of Being Free in One Act" and "The Second Act of Free
Being" contain a couple of dozen pieces -- mostly solo -- written for
harmonica. The stylistic influences vary, and include Beethoven and
Bartok.

Your friend can hear full-length MP3s of several of those pieces at:

"Widow's Walk" and "Winter Sun at Nobska" on that page are very much in
the European art music tradition.

Hi,

I don't know how Magic set his rig, but last time I
saw Charlie Musselwhite, he was playing through a
Fender Red knob, but he was not using a bullet mic.
It was some kind of stick mic, similar to an SM-57.
He told me it wasn't his amp, but was borrowed for
him for the show from a local music store.

He, of course, sounded great!
