A great tune for 3rd position is Chitlins Con Carne. I
strongly recommend the Kenny Burrell version on the cd
Midnight Blue. The head lays out great in 3rd. The
horn licks aren't that hard to work out and there's
plenty of space with just the guitar to come up with
your own stuff. I got turned onto the tune and the
position to play it in watching Billy Watson.
