It really depends on the gig. While I think it's almost universally
agreed that attire is required on most gigs, the nature of the gig is
what determines the appropriate attire. Bermuda shorts, flip-flops and
Hawiian shirt at a formal wedding are probably not a good idea but are
perfectly acceptable for a tiki bar gig. Whether you dress for comfort
and style, or have a dress code, this should be something that takes
into consideration the time and place of the gig, the expected/desired
audience, the expectations of the people that booked the band, and the
image that the band is trying to project. If a band member can't
understand this or disagrees with the prevailing wisdom, that's his
personal problem.
