Re: [Harp-L] Gig Attire

Hello all
Any suggestions for attire at blues gigs and "penalty" for non compliance? We played at a restaurant that is attached to a small bowling center on a repeat gig and while we all agreed to no jeans & baseball caps(at band startup); one guitar player refuses to dress as we agreed to(dress type pants and nice button down or pullover shirt) ??? [pay a fine; like 50% of his share, fire him] lol The harmonica player complies & everyone else also.
His song selection(his future songs ideas is another story)
Thanks for any insight,
Hal Iwan

If everyone else thinks the dress code you described is a good idea, the
guitar player is outvoted. You and the other people in the band have to
decide what to do about it. It depends on how good the guitar player is,
how well he/she gets along with everyone else, and how important the
dress code is to the rest of the band members. One thing for sure; it's
easier to find a guitar player than a bass player or drummer.
Sounds like you're asking for what my employer describes as "business
casual." If you want to look like the Kingston Trio that may be the way
to go. I think jeans are fine providing they're real indigo color and
not one of the various prefaded types available. Dress pants should be
paired with a shirt that people won't forget. Any type of pullover
shirt that isn't styled like a tee shirt or sweat shirt is a crime
against nature. In particular no polo, golf shirts, or anything with a
vee neck **ever**. The button down shirt rule is a little too preppy.
A spread collar, short point, or Nehru is more what you want. The
baseball cap rule is ok as long as it refers only to caps with an
adjusting strap in back, any type of cap worn backwards, or any cap that
doesn't refer to an actual baseball team--no gimme caps, no joke caps,
no caps with the logo of any team from another sport. Caps that
duplicate caps worn by an actual baseball team are borderline
permissible. Personally, I prefer a stingy brim fedora, pork pie, or
beret if you have to wear something on your head. You might mention to
people that want to wear hats that the audience might think they're bald.
When my brother was in high school he was in a band that the bass
player's father decided to manage. When the "manager" proposed stage
suits the band fell apart.
