Dear list,

I happen to have a very nice Hohner Educator 1 in C... Looks like a
big Golden Melody with two extra holes on the left. Starting on hole 1,
it is tuned like the 2nd octave of your regular Marine Band.
Unfortunately, the two extra holes are out of tune (badly). How do these
holes relate to the rest o the harp ? What notes are they supposed to
play?

The Educator 1 and Educator 2 were made for Education by Hohner. There were student and teacher books to go with them very comprehensively and well written by Gareth Walters and Albert Rowe (Music and script ) They were written so that teachers could work the harmonicas with recorders in class... So, much of the books was duet stuff right from the beginning.

The educator 2 was a chromatic version of the educator 1 and looked rather like a |Chrometta.

The low two holes on each of these instruments were laid out as follows

1) G (Blow) A (Draw)
2) C (B) B (D)
3 and onwards were just as the rest of a chromatic.
You got the sharp of each of those notes with the lever in.

The Educator 1 was a superb valved diatonic. It's only drawback was that the covers were of plated steel... which were cut and bent after plating. This meant that the cut edges quickly went rusty. A case of a few pence spoiling an excellent instrument.
