Re: [Harp-L] carvin vintage 16 amp

Hi John and All

I think I posted some comments last year about this amp, mainly that it's
good for guitar but not that great for harp. It's only input is what Carvin
calls a "soak" channel - meaning an extra preamp gain stage is incorporated
that can be adjusted for more distortion at lower volumes - think "master
volume". It's just way to wooly for a high output mic.
I tried one out at the Carvin store when it first came out and it had
basically the same characteristics as the "soak" channel of the Nomad
(1x12") or the Belair (2x12") but the main drawback is that the "regular"
channel is absent - that's the channel that sounds so good on my Nomad (with
a pre tube and speaker swap). Hope this helps somewhat - of course, if
there's a retail store near you can check it out for yourself. One thing I
learned from my Carvin experience is that EL84 amps can sound great for
harp - just keep an open mind.

Cheers,
Staggerin' Jim

Subject: [Harp-L] carvin vintage 16 amp

> Carvin catalog shows a "Vintage 16" amp (similar to Blues Jr) with 16
watts, 12" speaker, reverb. It comes with 2 EL84s and 3 12ax7s. Also an
option to switch to 5 watts. Sounds like it could have potential, but I
don't recall ever hearing it discussed as a possible harp amp. Anybody have
experience with this amp? Thanks. --john k.
