I have 2 ideas. 1st...begin with the 1st 3 notes playing as many ideas as
you can before adding the 4th, 5th...notes etc....(ala Dave Barrett).
Sometimes I will even just play 1 note all the way through a song and then
let myself go on the last few bars.
2nd...vary your backing tracks using variations
of the melodys or hooks as your leads. Hope this helps.
