Re: [Harp-L] Jump blues opinions--LW vs George Smith

I am not the originator of this idea, and I don't know where I first read it.

****
LW approaches the instrument as if he was playing a single horn (i.e., a soloist).

George Smith approaches the instrument as if he was playing an entire horn section.
****

Not to say that one (player or style) is better than the other--each has its time and place.

I agree with the earlier posts that included Count Basie, Glen Miller, and the like. When you play along with these recordings, TRY to sound like the horn section, then TRY to sound like the soloist. I emphasize TRY because I can do neither in actuality. But in making said attempt, I have grown in both directions.

Hope this helps.

Will

I find myself gravitating more and more to jump blues and I would like to start listening to some of the real deal 40s/50s stuff that's available. But I'm interested in some opinions on where to start. When I browse through bluebeatmusic.com there is so much available it's pretty overwhelming!! Where do I start?
Thanks, Jay
