hey Jervis,

   i have that DVD. good stuff. i'm not an expert on
hand techniques for the harp, but my feeling on this
is that it's probably a subtle effect you just can't
hear due to the all the "processing" the sound's been
through. sonny and sbw II were both amazing acoustic
players, and by all accounts were able to create
beautifully subtle effects in their acoustic playing.
it's reasonable to believe that with the recording
equipment of the time, etc, some of that would be
lost. Sonny Terry especially didn't seem the type to
do something like that "just for looks" (what would he
care how it looks anyway? ;). try playing around with
it yourself. you might be surprised how much
difference your hands (or even just two fingers) can
make in your acoustic sound.
