[Harp-L] re: why use effects?

While it's true an amp colors your sound, most people don't call an amp an
effect.
When you plug a Telecaster into a blackface Pro Reverb you can color your sound
with a pleasing distortion. When you add a Pro Co Rat to the equation your
sound changes radically.
Experimenting with effects can be fun but most stomp boxes are made for guitar.
Especially if you use a hot mic like a Green Bullet, you can have too hot a
signal, giving you a lousy sound--lousy meaning harsh, lots of noise, and
brittle.Try before you buy.
Also if you plan to use effects, plan to spend a lot of time practicing with
effects Effects can trash your tone fast. It takes a lot of time, patience, and
experimentation to figure out how to use them. That's why I don't use them. I
have limited practice time and barely have time to practice the basics.
