Fwd: RE: [Harp-L] Joe Filisko Sound Sample
Once again Joe Filisko does something very impressive with the
application of a simple idea.
The harmonica was designed to play melody out of one corner of the
mouth and chordal rhythm accompaniment out of the other.
That's all that Joe is doing.
But he does it so well!
He makes it sound impressive by making his chords sound huge (just-
tempered chords?), by the eventual use of octaves as Richard Hunter
notes, and by the intricacy of how he alternates left and right. Of
course, the drum-roll effect on the chords (done, I think , with the
soft palate) adds to the effect in a very impressive way, partly
because it sounds like the familiar drum-roll effect on this well-
known tune, and partly because the effect is rare - and not easy to
do - on harmonica.
While Joe's technique is faultless and highly evolved, the impression
he creates is largely the result of his carefully thinking out how to
arrange the tune. And that arrangement makes use of the resources of
the harmonica to create a memorable effect. At times, it amounts to a
form of illusionism - it sounds like more than one player because of
the rolled chord that alternates nimbly with the melody; it sounds
like he's playing a whole line in octaves when it's just a few notes
applied at the right time.
It's a testament to the depth not only of Joe's understanding of the
instrument and how to use it creatively, but also of just how many
resources lurk in this seemingly simple instrument, just waiting to
be exploited by resourceful and imaginative people like Joe.

What you may not know is that this is a live solo performance. Sounds

more than one player doesn't it ?
