Have I made a mistake in which one to start on?

Don't worry about it; you did fine. The Hard Bopper is a good
instrument. As a beginner on chromatic you might have chosen
something either less expensive (the Hohner Super Chromatica that the
Toots model is based on, or maybe a Hering) or more expensive, like a
Hohner CX-12, or bigger, like the various 16-hole models.
The Hard Bopper won't bite you and it won't go horribly out of tune
if you don't play it ridiculously hard, nor will it jam up too often
if you don't eat and drink while playing it. It's a loud beast and
should serve you well. If you find that you like the chordal third
position style of Chicago and West Coast blues chromatic, you may
decide to extend your playing peasure by investing in lower keys of
12-hole chromatic or in a 16-hole, which has the lowest-pitched
bottom end.
